Case Study – Senior Business Intelligence Consultant

Our client within the Ontario Government supports a wide range of internal business units with their data and information requirements, and had a need for a senior consultant who could lead multiple engagements from business analysis through to technical delivery. Technical environment included Cognos Framework Manager, DB2 including development of queries, data cubes, dashboards and reports to provide critical data to support a wide range of policy decisions. 

Aside of the obvious need for a strong grounding in both the core technical requirements and an understanding of the Ontario Government, the consultant needed to be able to pivot among various projects, each with different user dynamics, priorities and deliverables. As a result, one of the key determining factors for success was a strong multi-tasking capability as well as the ability to effectively interact with a wide range of personalities and group dynamics in order to effectively deliver on project requirements.

At Flex, we started by diving into the requirements with the hiring manager, going beyond what was in the technical description, and quickly realized that soft skills were going to be the key differentiator of the successful candidate. From our deep network of BI Consultants, we were able to source several candidates for the 'long list' and narrowed it to 2 candidates with senior level experience, excellent analysis and negotiation skills and were ultimately successful in meeting the client requirements.
